Elderberry syrup is my FAVORITE natural remedy for a cold, cough or flu.

I have used it for quite some time for my family, and it works wonders for my husband, myself and my toddler (it was great when he was a baby, too).

Elderberries are naturally high in vitamins A, B, & C… Which is what makes it a great immune system stimulator. The complex sugars it contains also help to support immune health. I like to add some of my other favorite super-herbs to the syrup to give it an extra boost. Cinnamon, cloves, and ginger all help to reduce inflammation, boost the immune system, and combat the nasty symptoms that accompany illness. Raw honey helps to provide natural probiotics and enzymes as well (for children under 1, sub honey with another sweetner.)

Homemade Elderberry Syrup

What you’ll need:

  • 4 oz dried Elderberries
  • 4 c purified water
  • 2 tbsp ginger powder (or 2 inches fresh ginger chopped)
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon (organic powder or 2 cinnamon sticks)
  • 1 tsp clove powder (or 6 whole cloves)
  • 1/2 – 1 c raw honey
    • for babies under 1 year old, substitute with coconut sugar, organic cane sugar, or maple syrup.

How to do it:

  1. Bring Elderberries, water, ginger, cinnamon and cloves to a boil in a pot. Stir, reduce heat to low and simmer for 45 mins.
  2. Remove mixture from heat. Smash berries against the side of the pot to release juices. Use a small strainer or nut bag/cheese cloth to strain out liquid and discard berries (do not eat berries whole, they can upset your stomach on their own).
  3. Once juice has reduced to about room temperature (warm, but not hot), stir in raw honey until combined.
  4. Store in a glass jar. Refrigerate for 1 month or freeze for up to 6 months.

Dosage

(rough estimate – follow your intuition to know what is best for you and your child)

Adults can take 1 tbsp once a day preventatively, or 3x a day when ill

Children around 1-2 tsp once a day preventatively, or 3x a day when ill

Toddlers 1 tsp once a day preventatively or 3x a day when ill

Babies 1/4 – 1/2 tsp once a day preventatively or 3x a day when ill

*Breastfeeding mothers can take it to help get it to baby.

*Consult practitioner if pregnant. Because Elderberries stimulate immune system it can cause a negative reaction in some pregnant women.

    1. Hey Sarah! So, to answer your question simply… yes, it is safe to consume daily. However, because it is an immune-boosting herb, some people, especially those with autoimmune conditions may find that they don’t feel their best on it. Herbs that are immune modulating and adaptogenic are preferable for daily consumption… However most people will respond well to elderberry. It’s best when taken a few days on, and 1-2 days off for the best effectiveness. It is better as a preventative when you know something is going around, rather than just taking every day. Some herbs I like for daily tonic use are reishi, astragalus, garlic, and red raspberry leaf. Everyone’s body is different so try experimenting and see how you feel! 🙂 Hope that helps!
