One of the first “roadblocks” beginners in herbal medicine face is not knowing how to prepare them simply. Most people understand how to make a simple tea, however, if you’re anything like me I am often impatient waiting for the water to cool off enough to drink it or want more than just a small mug. My favorite preparation of loose leaf herbs are healing infusions. So I will teach you how to do them!
The benefits of preparing herbs as a healing infusion is that you’re able to draw out a concentrated amount of the medicinal qualities of the herbs you’re using by a tried and true method that requires little to no effort. Since most herbs are tonic, meaning they are most effective by taking small doses each day, this preparation makes it so that you can see the benefits of herbs on your health.
How to make a healing herbal infusion
What you’ll need:
- 1 quart sized mason jar & lid
- About 1/2-1 c of desired herb, loose leaf
- Filtered or distilled water
How to do it:
- Prepare your infusion by filling a quart sized mason jar about 1/4 full with desired herb(s). It’s no science, just eyeball it.
- Boil water in a stainless steel or other non-toxic pot. Pour over the herbs, enough water to fill the jar.
- Stir the herbs until they are all covered and screw on the lid tightly. Set on the shelf and let steep for 1 – 12 hours. I like to let mine sit overnight to drink first thing in the AM.
Some of my favorite herbs to make infusions with are red raspberry leaf (especially good for pregnant and lactating mamas), nettle, dandelion, lemon balm, peppermint, chamomile, or a combination! Experiment and find what fits your taste, needs, and cravings. I find intuition is the best way to gauge what herbs you should be using and putting in your body. If you don’t find herbs to be very palpable, stir in a little raw honey to taste.
